Reseach Group 'Biofilms'

Head: Dr. Lara Thieme

Biofilms represent a preferred way of life of microorganisms. Biofilm formation by pathogenic bacteria is often accompanied by infections that are difficult to treat and even chronic. Dr. Thieme's research group is investigating various therapeutic options, ranging from new antibiotics and combination therapies to surface modifications and phage therapy.

Reseach Group

' Molecular Diagnostics'

Head: Dr. Oliwia Makarewicz

Molecular diagnostics is a central component of routine diagnostics. However, increasingly resistant Gram-negative bacteria pose a major challenge to them. Dr. Makarewicz's research group is dedicated to the development of new molecular and PoC tests for the direct detection and differentiation of pathogens and resistances from human material, such as blood.

Reseach Group

'CaSe' - Cloud computing and sequencing

Head: Dr. Christian Brandt

The research group led by Dr. Brandt, is involved in the analysis of resistance transmission through plasmids, microbiomes in human samples, and sequence-based resistance prediction, among others. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, the group has been involved in SARS-CoV-19 sequencing using Nanopore technology.

Reseach Group

'Nosocomial Tracking'

Head: Dr. Claudia Stein

Dr. Stein's research group is dedicated to the scientific aspects of hospital hygiene. This includes continuous sequencing-based surveillance of resistant pathogens at the UKJ to detect or prevent outbreaks at an early stage. Furthermore, projects on novel decontamination methods of hospital materials are investigated.

Contract Research and Therapeutics

Head: Dr. Anita Hartung

In cooperation with industrial partners and research institutions, but also in our own projects, we analyze the efficacy of new and old therapeutics against planktonic bacteria and biofilm, and test new diagnostics on clinical isolates.
