The IIMK started its work in 2011 as Section of Infectiology in Internal Medicine II, Dept. of Gastroenterology/Hepatology/Infectiology. On 01.04.2012 the clinical research group 'Clinical Infectiology' under the direction of Prof. Pletz and funded by the Federal Ministry of Education du Research (FKZ 01KI1204) started its research activities and entered the 2nd funding phase (FKZ 01KI1501) on 01.04.2015. On 01/01/2013, the Infectious Diseases Section became the classified Center for Infectious Diseases and Hospital Hygiene by merging with Hospital Hygiene, and since 01/01/2018, the Institute of Infectious Diseases and Infection Control.

During the past years, numerous laboratory projects but also clinical studies were carried out and successfully completed.
