Homepage / About IKARUS / Funding • Promotion

The research group »Infections in the Cardiovascular System: Pathophysiology, Therapy and Diagnostics • IKARUS« will be funded by the Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation for a total of 1.3 million Euros for a total of three years from July 2024 to June 2027.

The seven clinician scientists enrolled in the college are supported on their way to scientific independence through 50% protected research time over three years, individual mentoring and a structured continuing education program.

IKARUS not only imparts in-depth expertise on cardiovascular infections, but also qualifies its clinical scientists to develop new scientific issues and implement them interdisciplinary – with the long-term goal of sustainably improving research and patient care.

Scientific Training & Support

The colleagues are involved in interdisciplinary working groups and receive support from

  • a clinical supervisor – to ensure protected research time and specialist training – and
  • a scientific supervisor – for methodological and substantive support.

Regular meetings and progress updates ensure optimal project development and networking.

Training & Mentoring

»IKARUS« offers a diverse qualification programme with

  • scientific seminars & methodical courses
  • soft-skill trainings
  • guest lectures by international experts and
  • individual mentoring by external scientists.

Career Development & Networking

The colleagues benefit from a close connection to national and international networks:

  • participation in conferences, meetings and guest stays in research laboratories
  • scientific symposia and a retreat of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Clinical Research at Jena University Hospital
  • annual intern retreat day and regular interdisciplinary, informal meetings

Integration into Specialist Training

The protected research time can be designed flexibly, e.g. in rotation models with alternating clinical and research phases. Up to 12 months of research time can be counted towards specialist training. Clinical rotation in infectious diseases is also possible.

Perspectives

IKARUS specifically prepares for a scientific career. After the programme, there are funding opportunities such as the Advanced Clinician Scientist Programme of the Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Research at Jena University Hospital or support with third-party funding applications for their own research projects.
