The Institute (IIMK) was established to consolidate the clinical infectious disease expertise at the Jena University Hospital. The optimal management of infectious diseases requires an interdisciplinary approach. Therefore, we work closely together with other departments.

We care for patients with various infectious diseases according to the current state of science within the framework of a clinic-wide consultation service and a special outpatient clinic. Together with the Hospital Pharmacy and the Institute for Medical Microbiology, we optimize the use of antibiotics at the hospital as part of an antibiotic stewardship program.

In addition to the classic hospital hygiene tasks, we are also working on the continuous improvement of clinical processes in order to further reduce the rate of hospital-acquired infections and thus increase patient safety.

IIMK's research focuses on new strategies against infections caused by multi-resistant pathogens, respiratory infections and bacterial biofilms, as well as immunity to and phylogeny of SARS-CoV-2.

I am glad that our web site arouses your interest. I am grateful for any suggestions and criticism.

Yours

Prof. Dr. Mathias Pletz

Director of the Institute of Infectious Diseases and Infection control
