ThIMEDOP

The Thuringian Innovation Center for medical technology solutions ThIMEDOP is one of six Thuringian innovation centers. It is being set up at Jena University Hospital in cooperation with the TU Ilmenau and the IPHT. The center combines the technological strengths of our region in optics and photonics with the clinical focuses of Jena University Hospital. These focal points include sepsis research and aging research as well as the associated developments in technical, photonic-optical and clinical-experimental-oriented methods and systems for early detection, diagnosis, therapy and rehabilitation.

The partners work with state-of-the-art equipment on interdisciplinary issues in order to simplify the transfer of research ideas to competitive products or services. This includes the implementation of pilot studies, the creation of prototypes and the practical, patient-related evaluation.

ThIMEDOP research report

CeTraMed

With federal funding under $ 91B GG, a new research building is being erected at Jena University Hospital, in which scientists will conduct research to understand and combat  diseases of the elderly. The aim of the Center for Translational Medicine - CeTraMed - is to elucidate the mechanisms of age-associated diseases with the help of biophotonic methods in order to develop new forms of diagnosis and therapy. The UKJ is taking on the 50% share of the state's construction costs of 28 million euros.

In September 2019, the foundation stone was laid for the building with 3800 square meters of usable space, 2210 square meters of which  laboratory space. The shell construction was completed for a year. 14 research groups will be located in the new building, including the ThIMEDOP groups.

Clinical trials

The ethics committee of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena is established at the medical faculty. As a scientific service provider, the Center for Clinical Studies of Jena Universital Hospital supports clinical research in the clinical centers, which are operating numerous study units.

In 2019 and 2020, Jena University Hospital started enrollment in 39 multicenter phase I / II studies and began participation in four phase II / III studies and in 95 multicenter phase III / VI studies. During the period, 26 clinical studies according to the Medicines Act were conducted, six of which investigator initiated trials, as well as further interventional and non-interventional trials. Large, publicly funded trials directed at Jena University Hospital:

  • PETN obstetrics,
  • ARISS sepsis intensive care
  • FRESCO stool transplant
  • CONNECT neuroimmunology

Promoting young researchers

In 2019 and 2020, the Medical Faculty was able to acquire public funding to provide support for young scientists:

  • Graduate School Jena School of Molecular Medicine: Carl Zeiss Foundation
  • second funding phase for the Else Kröner Research College AntiAge
  • as part of the EU-funded Innovative Training Networks  TIPAT, ONCORnet, SmartAge
  • Junior research group within the SMITH consortium.

The Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Research serves as the umbrella for the young talent funding programs, which were restructured in accordance with the recommendations of the Science Council and the DFG. In 2019, calls in the new funding lines Clinician Scientist, Advanced Clinician Scientist, Medical Scientist, and Advanced Medical Scientistand were published for the first time. In 2019 and 2020, a total of

  • 65 doctoral scholarships (of which 44 women)
  • 25 Clinician Scientist grants (14 women)
  • 6 Advanced Clinician Scientist grants (all women)
  • 9 Medical Scientist grants (6 women)
  • 10 Advanced Medical Scientist grants (6 women)

be awarded.

The annual Summer School Molecular Medicine, which is funded by the DAAD, contributes to the internationalization of the promotion of young researchers. In 2019, 23 scientists (16 women) from 13 countries took part. Ten participants were won in a competitive process for a doctoral project in Jena. Due to the pandemic, the summer school could not take place in 2020.

Teaching and study programs

Dr. Caroline Klingner, coordinator of the "Nervous System and Psyche" section in the medicine curriculum, was awarded the Janus Cornarius Teaching Prize by the student council in 2019.
In 2020, the award went to the cross-sectional area "Imaging, Radiation treatment and Radiation protection", which was particularly committed to e-learning formats.

Habilitation award 2019

The habilitation award of the Friedrich Schiller University endowed with 5,000 euros was awarded to Prof. Dr. Tony Bruns. The physician, who now holds a professorship at the Aachen University Hospital, has received the award for his habilitation thesis "Investigations into the immunological mediation of inflammation, infection and organ failure in the course of chronic liver diseases". The habilitation award is financed by the university and its society of friends.

The dissertation prizes, each endowed with 750 euros, are also donated by the Society of Friends and Patrons of the FSU. The doctoral award of the Medical Faculty went to Dr. Uwe Haselmann in 2019 and to Dr. Yves Werner in 2020.

E-Learning

The courses for the more than 2500 students at the Jena Medical Faculty suddenly and almost without exception had to be  switched to online offerings in spring 2020. With great commitment and a talent for improvisation, the teachers developed digital courses.

The office of the students' dean, IT department, media center and student assistants offer methodical and technical support in the digital teaching work group. Investments in hardware and software create successively better technical conditions. Examples are the 1,183 instructional videos that were produced in 2020 and viewed 117,872 times on the DOSIS platform.
