Identification of Biotypes

PD Dr. Bianca Besteher

About

Our team investigates neurobiological features of psychopathology in the spectrum of depression via multimodal neuroimaging. Considering a symptom continuum in addition to traditional case-control settings enables several interesting points of view:

  1. inclusion of symptoms overlapping with other diagnoses (e.g. anxiety and somatoform disorders, post-infectious conditions like Post-COVID or ME/CFS),
  2. differentiation of biologically diverse sub-types of one generic diagnosis , especially with regards to sex-specific features and
  3. use of the subclinical part of the spectrum to investigate early origins of clinical syndromes.

With regard to these aspects we work towards a more precise and neurobiologically founded way of psychiatric diagnostics specific to an individual patient. Also, we are involved in clinical intervention projects regarding management of psychiatric Post-COVID symptoms.

Projects

CreAtiN bei Post-COVID – Intervention zur Beobachtung der postviraLen FatiguE (CANDLE) - ongoing

Randomized and placebo-controlled intervention study to observe fatigue symptoms, inflammatory parameters, and imaging markers in post-COVID patients. Supported by AlzChem Group.

Mobile WohnortnAhe Versorgung zur Steuerung der sektorüber-greifenden Therapie bei Post-COVID-19 in THüringen (WATCH), Intervention „SOUL“ - ongoing

Development and application of a cognitive-behavioral short-term intervention for the treatment of psychological post-COVID symptoms and improvement of illness management as part of a multimodal intervention for post-COVID patients from Thuringia.

Post-COVID Brain - Characterization and Imaging of the Neuropsychiatric Aftermath - data acquisition finished

This multimodal and longitudinal MR-imaging project investigates long-lasting structural, functional and metabolical brain alterations in patients with neuropsychiatric symptoms due to long-COVID and post-COVID

IBIS (Identification of Biotypes in the Spectrum of Depression) – data acquisition finished

Multimodal data set of MDD patients with biological, clinical and imaging data for cluster analysis to characterize biological sub-types of (pre-)clinical depression. These could perspectively facilitate more precise clinical assessment and prediction of the clinical course for an individual patient.

TiPs (Tinnitus & Psyche) - data acquisition from 2016 to 2017, analyses concluded in 2019

The Tips project aimed to identify brain structural correlates of tinnitus and psychiatric comorbidity and interactions between both conditions.
