Emma Teeling is a full professor in the School of Biology and Environmental Science at University College Dublin. She has received a number of prestigious awards for her integrative research, including a European Research Council Starting grant and a Science Foundation Ireland, President of Ireland Young Researcher Award. Emma has developed methods and approaches to study a very peculiar animal model: the bat. In many ways, bats are ideal for studying two of the major research priorities at UKJ, namely aging and sepsis. Given their body weight and metabolic rate, bats live extraordinarily long lives, despite, or perhaps because of, their unique immunity as hosts for a number of deadly viruses. The latter received considerable attention with the outbreak of the corona pandemic. Both sepsis and corona virus infection are known to trigger a cytokine storm that ultimately controls fate.
