About us

The research of Dr. Roberto Goya-Maldonado and his group focuses on the interface between systems neuroscience and psychiatry, with a strong emphasis on translational approaches to understanding the neural mechanisms underlying mental disorders, particularly affective disorders. The overarching goal is to advance diagnosis and treatment by achieving a more precise characterization of neural systems, their functions, and their modulation through non-invasive interventions such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS).

A central focus of his work is the multimodal analysis of large-scale brain networks and their dynamic interactions, primarily using functional neuroimaging techniques such as fMRI. These approaches enable the investigation of alterations in brain connectivity associated with different psychopathological conditions, especially major depression.

In addition, his research explores the development of biomarkers through the integration of neuroimaging data with phenotypic, inflammatory, genetic, and epigenetic information. This work aims to improve differential diagnosis and to predict treatment response, thereby supporting precision medicine approaches in psychiatry.

Overall, his research agenda seeks to translate findings on brain network connectivity and dynamics into modern clinical applications, including rTMS, to promote more effective and individualized treatments for mental disorders.
